MET GALA 2024: Beauty Predictions
What trends in the makeup world we can be expecting to see at the 2024 Met Gala. The theme this year - Sleeping Beauties: Reawakened Fashion, can be explored in so many different ways so I’ve labelled a couple of the elements of makeup I’d love to see and how it could be incorporated in different ways. If you haven’t already read my first post about my designer predictions for the 2024, Sleeping Beauty: Reawakened Fashion Met Gala, then go do that first as this will all make much more sense!
Considering the overarching theme of Gardens and all things floral, beauty and botanical, as well as the elements of historic archival fashion elements which could be daring Wildcards to the theme, (such as stones, water and creatures like butterflies et cetera). The makeup looks to go alongside this years fashion, could go anywhere!
However as already seen this year, there is a huge hype behind blush and glassy, glowing skin. This is sure to make an appearance in many ways whether it is the glassy perfected, mannequin-like skin by Pat McGrath as seen first in the Maison Margiela SS24 show. Or bright, softened blush as seen with Sabrina Carpenter over the past month, everyone is LOVING her dewy and fresh, blush focused makeup. Bringing back the bright under eyes with pink undertones to give a very romantic and flirty effect. This look can be adapted in many ways to compliment a whole range of outfits.
We want to be thinking about things in bloom and what colours come to mind when you think about a fresh English garden. To me, ‘The Garden of time’, evokes the feeling of new, ‘springing’ beauty. So bright colours and pastel colours. I really want to see if anyone's going to be using them to a great extent in makeup, especially for looks which are fairly simple in colour palette you could really go quite heavy with makeup and do a really gorgeous blended softened look. Lots of peach, pink and yellow spring to mind. But soft green and even lavender can be used very cleverly to create cohesion in the colour palette of a very powerful garment.
The adorned ears in the Schiaparelli show (also by Pat McGrath) also showed some utterly gorgeous perfected skin. Looks simple but is incredibly tricky to achieve in the right manner, though 100% worth it. Perfected, natural skin without the heavy use of concealing or heavy coverage has taken a big part in the current makeup world. This fresh idea could work very well with similar concepts to the jewel adorned ears.
I want to see how jewellery can be intertwined into this theme this year, and how it could be incorporated into a makeup look to create a cohesive aspect. Be it little pearls or swarovski crystals dotted around eyes in liner or eyeshadow, or an all over facial adornment. The options are endless!
In contrast, you could expect to see wildcard looks with quite dramatic and grungy styled makeup to complement a rustic or stone inspired look. Particularly this would work very well with structural designs or outfits with particularly simple, neutral colour schemes. Really helping to convey a sense of drama and intrique to contrast against the heavily floral and fresh theme which may be the safer option.
The Garden of Time could easily give nod to the symbolism of death and particularly refer back to a state of time and preservation, so deep, dramatic effects would be
Equally, hair transformations this year have already been quite big. And so I would be very surprised to see if no celebrity turns up, having had a hair transformation. Florence Pugh over the past year or so, has had many different hairstyles, lengths and colours. So I am intrigued to see if she brings another one to the table. Although, I will say I hope Jared Leto doesn't. His hair is perfect just the way it is!
